Committed to Committees (Acts 6)

In serving in a leadership role with the North Carolina Assemblies of God for the past five years, I have sat in my share of committee meetings. Some meetings are incredibly entertaining and encouraging; while other meetings are like any movie on the “Women’s Channel”; nothing but pain and disappointment.

In Acts 6, the newly formed Church is facing its first organizational problem. What was there solution?

“Brothers, choose seven men from among you who known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom.
We will turn this responsibility over to them.” (Acts 6:3)

Incredible! Their solution was to form a committee. That seemed to end the issue. The story in Acts changes to focus on one committee member, Stephen.

Here is the principle: People are the solution to the problem. The right people (filled with the Spirit and wisdom) in the right place with the right focus make all the difference. If you are having a bad committee meeting, then you have the wrong people in the room.

If you find yourself leading meetings, I recommend reading, “Death by Meeting” by Patrick Lencioni.
