Not Meant for Safe Harbors

My favorite tv show is back for a new season and it is cause to blog. I absolutely love watching the show The Deadliest Catch , which comes on The Discover Channel on Tuesday night. I am still trying to figure out why i love this show. It may be that the captians remind me of my coaches growing up as they bark the orders. It may be the man vs nature conflict, or the man vs. himself.

More than anything, I thin it is the risk vs reward nature of the show. These men are not reckless. They are taking a calculated risk. I feel that in church planting. I left a great steady ministry to launch out into seas that have been stormy at times. At times it feels reckless, but it is actually a calculated risk. I am calculating that the God who clearly called me to do this, will provide. That He will make me a “fisher of men”. I love this quote by St. Thomas Aquinas

“If the highest aim of a captain were to preserve his ship, he would keep it in port forever.”

Your life was not built to stay in the harbor. You were built by God to influence a world that is in need of His grace and compassion.

I actually never read this post until today when the tag caught my eye on the side of the blog. They played an entire season one Saturday or Sunday afternoon last year and I actually got hooked into watching about 5 episodes in a row.

Wow, I never thought about being a “fisher of men” as requiring us to leave the harbor into open waters…but it is speaking volumes to my life right now. Awesome.
