There is always a risk in taking a relationship to the next level. Once you open up to someone to discover something new about them, they have the power in the relationship. Giving away control (i.e. power) is very difficult.

Did you go to your Jr. High dances? I loved them, but they were built for an awkward, over-confident extrovert like me to win. I was in junior high during the years of 1986-1989 where we “Walked Like an Egyptian” with the Bangals and tight rolled our jeans to the “Final Countdown” with my favorite 80′s band Bon Jovi. About 30 minutes into the dance the most awkward minutes in human history would be written: The Jr. High slow dance. Poison would start to slow rock with the 80′s style Power Ballad letting our early pubescent ears know that “Every Rose Has Its Thorn.” We had no clue what it meant but we knew you couldn’t dance alone to it.

Just like your dances, all the guys were on one side of the grand canyon & all the girls were on the other. Being one of the first to brave that deep abyss was simply gut wrenching. To walk across in full view of all your friends, and give control over to someone else. Being asked to dance is great. Asking someone else to dance was like free-falling with the other person holding the parachute.

You have no control over how it is going to end: Rejection (I had my share), Acceptance (Had some wins), or confusing laughter (had one of those).

Taking any relationship to the next level of trust is risky. God knows how you feel:

    Hebrews 4:14-16 (New International Version)

“14Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin. 16Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

Here is the Bangals singing “Walk Like An Egyptian” (just for the laugh)

In yesterday’s message I ended with the imagery of Rembrandt’s painting “The Return of the Prodigal Son”. I have been profoundly moved by works of art several times in my life, and this is one of the monumental works for me. I have been blessed to stand before the original in The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. It is a picture full of the emotion of Luke 15, and I can picture myself in each of the characters.

The son – I have been the one running

The brother – I have been angry at the grace of Christ

The onlooker – Watching with awe at the love of a father

The father – Embracing someone who has been in need of unearned love

I should have allowed you time to take in this work of art with me yesterday as we challenge each other to be “Walk Across the Room” people.

It was great to hang out last night with Chi Alpha at North Carolina State University. Chi Alpha is an on-campus ministry headed by Brian and Mindy Hargett that does a great job connecting with students from all walks of life. We spent the evening talking about The Parable of the Wheat and the Weeds.

The point of the parable is that saints and sinners lives are to intertwine until the end of days. We spend our time being like the servants who wanted to rip up the weeds by the roots. Our role is to simply be good, healthy wheat amongst the weeds. It is a great story to sit around a good cup of Larry’s Beans coffee and discuss the imagery.

On another note….. my blog just went over One Thousand views this past weekend. Thanks for being a part of the journey, and a special thanks to all who have left comments to share.

Blessings on the day.

Yesterday we spent a family day at “The State Fair of North Carolina”, and it was especially fun to have Darcy’s parents with us. I love the state fair! It is like Redneck Disney World. Where else can your family watch tobacco dry, hear a Gospel message, watch a bearded man making walking sticks, ride “The Claw”, and eat deep fried _______ (fill in the blank, its all there)?

At the end of the day Kylie, Jackson, and I were walking back to the car.

Kylie asked, “How far did we walk today, Dad? One mile or maybe two?”

Laughing, I told her we probably walked between 5 to 7 miles.

Baffled she asked, “How come I can’t walk one mile at school, but I can walk 7 miles at the fair?”

Motivation is full of kinetic energy. It will keep you going when normally you would quit. As we begin to study the concept of being “Walk Across the Room” people, I want to challenge you to discover your motivation.

Here is mine:
“Freely you have received, freely give.” (Matthew 10:8)

I did not pay for the grace I have received. It was like receiving a free book of fair ride tickets that contained more tickets than your stomach can take. Do you sell them or give them away? Freely received; Freely give.
